How to Add a Fee-Based Item

Overview
A fee-based item allows you to set a cost as a percentage of another value in your project. This is particularly useful for fees like permits, general contractor fees, or miscellaneous material markups that are calculated based on the project’s overall cost or price.

Before You Begin

  • Identify the percentage-based fee you want to add and the project value it will be calculated from (e.g., Project Cost or Project Price).

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Add a Fee-Based Item

    1. In your proposal or template, click on Add Item.
    2. Select the option for a Fee Item.
    3. Assign an appropriate name to this fee. For example, Permit.
  2. Set Up the Calculation

    1. Locate the Calculation field for the newly added fee item.
    2. Choose the base value for the calculation. Common options include Project Cost or Project Price.
    3. Once you’ve selected the base value, click into the calculation area again to open it further.
  3. Enter the Percentage

    1. Type in the percentage you want to apply as a decimal. For example, if you want a 10% fee, enter 0.10.
    2. Confirm your entry. The fee-based item will now automatically calculate its value as 10% of the chosen base (e.g., Project Price).

Example

  • Naming the fee “Permit”
  • Selecting “Project Price” as the base
  • Entering 0.10 for a 10% fee

Tips & Best Practices

  • Use Clear Naming: Give your fee item a descriptive name so it’s easy to identify and understand.
  • Verify Your Calculations: Preview your proposal to ensure the fee is calculating correctly.
  • Test Different Percentages: If you’re unsure about the percentage, try different values and compare the final totals to find the right fit.
