How Discounts Work in Bolster
In Bolster, discounts are applied at the quote level and automatically flow through to all line items and invoices tied to that quote.
Setting a Discount on a Quote
When creating or editing a quote, you can apply a discount in one of two ways:
- Percentage (%) – A percentage off the total quote
- Fixed Amount ($) – A flat dollar amount off the total quote
Once applied, the discount is automatically calculated across the entire project.
How Discounts Are Calculated
Let’s break it down with a simple example:
Scenario:
- 2 bathrooms (quantity = 2)
- Flooring: $1,000 per unit
- Tile: $500 per unit
Step 1: Base Quote Total (Before Discount)
- Per unit: $1,500
- Total: $3,000
Step 2: Apply Discount (10%)
- Discount per unit: $150
- Total discount: $300
Step 3: Final Price (Before Tax)
- $3,000 − $300 = $2,700
Step 4: Tax
- Tax is calculated after the discount is applied
How Discounts Apply to Line Items
You don’t need to manually discount individual items.
Instead:
- Every cost item automatically inherits the quote’s discount
- The discount is applied proportionally to each item
Example:
- Flooring ($1,000) → $100 discount per unit
- Tile ($500) → $50 discount per unit
If your project has multiple units (e.g., 2 bathrooms), the discount scales accordingly.
How Discounts Work on Invoices
Invoices always reflect the discount set on the original quote.
When generating an invoice:
- The same discount percentage is applied to the invoice amount
- This applies to progress draws and partial invoices
Example (50% progress invoice):
- Invoice amount: $1,500
- Discount (10%): $150
- Tax applied to discounted amount ($1,350)
Key Rules to Know
- Discounts are quote-level only
You cannot apply different discounts to individual line items. - All items inherit the discount automatically
No manual adjustments needed. - Tax is calculated after discounts
Customers are taxed on the reduced price. - Quantities multiply discounts
More units = larger total discount. - Invoices always match the quote discount
Discounts cannot be changed at the invoice stage. - Accurate calculations
Bolster uses high-precision math to ensure accuracy, even on large projects.
