Adding a Floorplan and Setting Scale
This guide provides a straightforward process for adding a floorplan and setting the scale
For a full demonstration, watch the training video: “Adding Layer and Setting Scale”.
The video shows each step in real time, so you can see exactly how to upload your floor plan, add layers, and set the correct scale.
👉 You can either watch the video first, or follow the detailed steps below.
Step-by-Step guide:
Adding a floorplan and setting scale
This guide provides a straightforward process for adding a floorplan and setting the scale in a takeoff tool.
Before starting any draw takeoff, make sure you have the right template or assembly in place. For example:
-
Use an existing assembly (e.g. Scale Home) that already contains common items such as framing, windows, doors, plumbing, insulation, flooring, and cabinetry.
-
Add any new custom items you’ll need. For instance, if you’re working on a project that requires a deck, create a new item called Deck so you can track joists, railings, and other related components.
In the Pre-production section, click "Takeoff"
This is where all of your measurement and drawing work happens.

Click "Draw takeoff"

This option lets you upload floor plans or construction drawings to trace and measure over

You can upload plans from:
-
Bolster Drive (if they’re already stored there), or
-
Your computer (local files such as PDFs or images).
Click Upload, then select the file you need, and click Add

Set the drawing scale
Click “Not Scaled – click to scale now” on the drawing

Click "Continue"

If the plan already includes a scale (e.g., “¼ inch = 1 foot”), select it.
If not: Choose Custom Scale.
Click once at the start of a known dimension on the drawing. Click again at the end of that dimension (e.g., wall length labeled on the plan).

Enter the real-world measurement. Example: If a wall is labeled 19 ft 8 in, click the two endpoints of that wall and type 19.8 in the scale input box

Click Accept. Your drawing is now scaled correctly.

Verify and continue
Double-check the scale by measuring (by selecting the "Measure" tool) another known dimension on the plan. If it matches, you’re ready to start your takeoff measurements with confidence.
